This Week on Musicians Radio
It's one thirty a.m. and I'm on the tour bus driving from Birmingham to Atlanta.  We just stopped at a Waffle House.  Why? Because we're on the road. Waffle House is a guilty pleasure, like most things that peel a year off your life every time you do them.

Nowadays tour buses have internet.  It's helpful when you are trying to stay awake until the next hotel.  I mean how much comedy network can one person take  So I'm doing this week's newsletter which I will e-mail off and then hopefully we'll be on one of the many Peachtree streets in Atlanta.

Therefore...

This week on Musicians Radio

Jeff Young goes Behind The Scenes with Harvey Brooks

Jeff Young is my friend.  It's a good thing. Jeff Is a great keyboard player and singer.  The other day Jeff called me up and invited me to hang out with him and an old friend from New York - Harvey Brooks.

Unfortunately I couldn't make it. What a drag, I mean Harvey Brooks has played with some of the all time greats Dylan, Miles, The Doors, and Electric Flag.  Harvey was there when the whole rock music scene exploded in the sixties.

Wait... Jeff is my friend - maybe he wouldn't mind recording his chat with Harvey?

The result was a Behind The Scenes segment that Jeff did with Harvey as they drove up Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu.  Check it out and learn about Miles, Morrison, and how Buddy Miles wound up as the drummer in Mike Bloomfield's Electric Flag. It's great stuff.

Then, I'll get Under The Influence with...Tony Furtado

I'm sad that record stores are becoming a thing of the past. They used to be a great place to hear new music. Now, unless you have satellite radio or a good public station you are pretty limited. Okay that's the bad news. The internet - which has killed both record sales and record stores, does provide some good places to find new music if you are patient and persevere.

For instance, someone sent me a link to Tony Furtado's "myspace" page.  Suddenly I was hearing his version of Tom Petty's "Runnin' Down A Dream".  A great bluegrass/delta/picking meditation on a rock classic. I wanted more.  I went to iTunes and downloaded his new album titled "13" and for all the problems the internet has caused the "traditional" record business, it sure does allow us new ways to promote, discover and acquire new music. I mean not only was I a Tony Furtado fan in a matter of 30 minutes. I also dropped him an e-mail to see if he'd want to do an "Under The Influence" segment to talk about what influenced his style.

So to review. The record business as we used to know it is dying. Music is not. Music is vibrant and everywhere and while the royalty checks are smaller, our scope is bigger. Indies have more opportunities. Good musicians are no longer at the mercy of corporate "taste makers".  Doors are closing but gates are opening. Check out my interview with Tony Furtado - good music, good playing, and a good interview. All the result of four clicks on a good afternoon.

Also, next time you're at the newsstand check out the May issue of American Songwriter magazine.  Look for our very cool ad (thanks Kristen).

And of course thanks to Roland for all the support. They really make us go.  Hey why not check them out by clicking on this very handy link?
